Navigating The Dark Pits
« on: December 30, 2014, 03:08:32 pm »

I just had a frustrating adventure, where my very successful adventurer spent the last weeks of his life stumbling in vain around the massive batch of impassable land that is the dark pits. I have once found a tower with access to the underground goblin caverns, but it appears to have been a fluke. Is there a map or something for actually finding anything from the site?

Also, the area covered by the pits appears to be several times the size of a city, and filled with cross-shaped trenches. Is that how they're meant to work?

the idea of the goblin pit is that the trenches are connected via towers which go down to the underground. much of the structure is found underground and only the mounds are seen in the surface. same happens with the dark fortress, except it seems to have a central structure. in the case of pits there are many towers for entrance.

i wouldnt recomend to explore them anyway, it may be fun to kill goblins and the large amount of trolls that are down there, but the lag is unbearable.

but if you want to explore, the first layer is composed of hallways and rooms, eventually there are stairs which lead to large chambers which tendo to go several lvls using ramps.

its quite a mess to explore them, both by the lag and by the design of them.

There is generally enough room to build up speed and jump across the trenches, makes it much less annoying to traverse.

Dark pits normally don't have much lag, they're limited to 100 goblins and normally only have 100 trolls. It's the dark fortresses that you never want to go to ever. As for navigating dark pits, just not and jump around the chasms. Try to stay as high up as you can so you can see the towers.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

In my fortress dwarves are dying from old age.
Dwarven wine is a little bit like good chicken soup:  solid at room temperature.

Look in the upper-left corner of the screen.  It will show the direction of nearby features, which you can follow to find towers or the central fortress.

Dwarf, Goblin, and Elf sites are currently just place holders so the mess is understandable. Hopefully the new "arc" as Toady puts it, will add a bit to them.
