Brewers randomly cancelling
« on: December 28, 2014, 07:52:55 pm »

 Greetings fellow overlords.
Recently, my booze levels have dropped drastically due to apparent lack of fruits/plants (according to the announcements),despite the fact that I have farmers working around the clock, producing many types of plants, peaches and other fruit lying around under trees and herbalists bringing in berries. And the plant stockpile is nearly at 100. Strangely booze levels were at their highest when the fortress was in near famine with almost no plants (or pretty much anything else really, which is why it was a famine).

You can check the kitchen menu to see if you have something brewable.
Fruits are not plants, so you need to use q-a-f instead of q-a-b on the Still.
Make sure your have reserved barrels, because a barrel can only support one brewing job, no matter how little brooze it contains.

Another problem is your dorfs can carry your plant/fruit barrels around so the brewers can't use them.

Chances are it's barrel hauling that's causing the problem.

I would go with the suggestions above and produce a surplus of barrels/pots (preferably pots, at the craftdwarfs workshop).
I always have a healthy number of pots in my stockpiles, and haven't encountered any problems with booze production :^)

I'll add more barrels and see if that fixes it, but I doubt as it says there isn't enough plants/fruit. It might be that the booze was being used in the kitchens, so I disabled that.

what you could do is to remove the still and remake it again. I've had problems with cancelling orders in workshops (due to lack of raw materials) when the material is clearly available.

Just to clarify... the fruit under the trees means nothing until you harvest them.  But as the others said it's likely a hauling problem.  However, the job will cancel if you run out of -free- barrels/pots... and empty barrels in food stockpiles do NOT count as free.  So if you have 10 barrels just chilling in your food stockpile... completely empty... they won't be considered for brewing jobs.

Do the free barrels have to be in a furniture stockpile? What if I assigned a food stockpile to the stills? Will that allow the use of the barrels since only it can supple the stills?

The option turns red in the still menu if you lack free barrels or brew-able plants, so basically another dwarf must be swiping the barrel or plant between you selecting brew & the brewer reaching the barrel or plant. The easiest way to avoid this is having a dedicated barrel stockpile for your still.

Yup, its best to have a (nearby) furniture stockpile that only accepts barrels/pots.  Not only will this ramp up productivity, but helps with trying to micromanage other stockpiles to limit their barrel use.
