I have in the past made a glass pump stack that pumped the magma many, many z-levels up. It took a ridiculous amount of time to learn and micro-manage the process, not to mention the fact that it takes a long time to do it, period. I believe it was fully automated (powered), too. My conclusion after doing that is it takes far more effort to bring the magma up in this manner that it is to just keep your magma-fueled workshops at that level (the highest level to which the magma pipes extend with the magma). I wouldn't ever again bother with pump stacks to bring up the magma for this purpose. I recommend figuring out how many magma workshops you need at one time, digging that many channels, building that number x 3 iron or nickel minecarts, and taking the "minimalist" approach from the wiki to fill those channels.
