Powerleveling via Small Animals
« on: December 23, 2014, 06:46:34 pm »

I started to play adventure mode again in 40d...whatever, while waiting for the new lazy newb pack, when i suddenly got the urge about power leveling my armor, dodge and shield skill via small animals.... to bad they run away and hacking their legs off won't solve the problem  :P , but how about holding them with my hands? And bingo i get attacked but they miss mostly  but it still counts to the armor dodge(event tough i never move) fighter skill, funny thing, i even powerleveled observer with this  :o . I often use 2-4 ravens or keas in my current world for this tactic.
I don't know if this was already posted, i tried to search but it looks like the search function dislikes me.

WHERE DO YOU EVEN GET ENOUGH BABY FOR A PICKAXE? THERE ISN'T ENOUGH BABY.
It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

I like a couple of rabbits. Just one tires out too quickly, more than two makes me tire out too quickly.

BTW, Wiki knows all.

All the powerleveling info is kind of scattered around different threads, so if the search worked or not, or even if other posters had already written about it, it's still really good to post some variant again. It's cool when anyone posts what they've found.

A thing to add where the wiki is incorrect: Observer can be powerleveled as long as your character witnesses an action by your opponent that's directed at you (charge/grab/strike, etc), particularly actions directed at you by several opponents. So if you turtle up with several shields and let a mob swarm you, observer is powerleveled. Observer doesn't grow as fast as shield/dodge, but it does grow albeit at a slightly slower rate. If your character has armor and closer to base legendary defensive skills, you could use a hydra for turtling up since the hydra is essentially a fast mob. Think of the hydra as better stat return than a pack of wolves, or a brace of sea lampreys. If your character is strong enough to lie down during the macro, even better.

So at least i could confirm that Observer powerleveling possible is!  :D But i must say it goes only slitly slower then armor, dodge and fighter if you use the small animal hold tactic

The best way to powerlevel observer (from what I've gathered) is to have enemies attack you from multiple sides, specifically if both of the enemies are flanking you on both sides.

In the last version before version 40.01, I managed to get to around Master or something just because my starting location had so many wolves.

I used a bunch of crundles for this...

I hideously sneaked to the cliff over them, then viciously jumped down and grabbed 4 of them with my tentacles arms and legs.
Aside from boosting your Dodge, Fighter, Shield User, Armor User, Observer skills to the skies, it also makes your physical attributes hilariously high. By wallowing with the crundles a good afternoon, I became a true dwarven body builder! :D

Also, I find a way to powerlevel Wrestling skill too:
  • Train up your Ambuser skills, it is vital to have an appropriate skill level in order to use this technique.
  • Search for a small, harmless animal which will run away on the first sight of you.
  • Scare away the little bastard, then switch to sneaking, and wait for him/her to return. We're using the creatures habit which makes them return to the place where they were spawned.
  • When your opponent returns, try to sneak behind him, but it's important to avoid to be spotted.
  • Use wrestling to grab your exercise partner. Here comes the magic: if the enemy is not aware of your presence, it will never fight back. Instead, it will try to continue it's way to the spawn point, attempting to escape from your grab... in vain. (Considering you didn't choose an elephant or similar large animal for your training, it will not be able to break free. Otherways, you get super dwarf bonus points if you do so.) So, every attempt to struggle against you will count as a wrestling movement by literally just holding the animal in place.
  • Do nothing! Just wait and watch as you become a legendary wrestler... in a few ingame hours. You can even eat or drink if you like.  ;D
  • ...aaaand don't forget to use macros to speed up the process even more. (Hit [CTRL] + [R], then hit period [.] repeatedy for a while then press [CTRL] + [R] again to stop recording. Finally press [CTRL] + [P] to playback your previously recorded macro.)

This method is rather slow however. Its much faster to just change combat preferences and "walk into" the animal repeatedly. Within two minutes you should have expert fighting skills.

Powerleveling does feel cheaty though. Anybody know how weapon skills/fighting are increased naturally? If I chop off body parts with a sword it doesn't seem to raise the sword skill much. What dictates exp for that? Is it the difficulty of the blow?

U gain skill only if your opponent is conscious. So walking against an enemy is not so sophisticated and effective.

You only gain skill exp for weapon/shield/dodge/armor/observer if the opponent is conscious. But wrestling and fighter can be grown on an unconscious opponent which is broken as broken can be.

That's not great since stat gain is higher off of more dangerous creatures and because the fighter stat is one of the most important. When it's high you can be quite effective with a weapon you've never used before. Fighter skill > weapon skill (generally).

The fighter skill goes up when you attack and when you defend. Whether you powerlevel or choose to play more naturally (strict rogue, zero training), fighter will always be your biggest skill stat.

bahihs, if you're going to play strict rogue you just try to finish your fights as fast and as carefully as possible, fight opponents progressively stronger with minimum stat requirement (but within reason), and weapon/fighter will go up naturally and quickly. Powerlevelers can fight messy, carelessly and be creatively absurd and because of this, knowing stat minimums isn't required for their survival.
