new world generated and no dwarves/iron?
« on: December 21, 2014, 08:01:35 pm »

i like this cause the elves killed off the last dwarves, so i want to pretend i'm a faction that is rising from the ashes and take revenge on these treehuging honorless rats but...

if i decide to start a new fortress am i a lone kingdom or.... and i a puppet kingdom?

edit: also it is very hard to find iron and the only way to ensure i embark on some i reveal the map with dfhacks.. is there a less cheating way to find iron?

Flux stone layer and shallow metals. The S is important.

Yeah, I didn't remember I had ever found any iron since 2014.
The merchants sold hematite though.

You must be embarking on the wrong layers.

Or putting mineral scarcity far too high.

Here's some tips:
  • Hematite is the most common form of iron, then magnetite, and limonite is the least common but not exactly uncommon.
  • Iron ores are always one of the "shallow metals" as seen from the embark screen. You will never find iron below the caverns.
  • Try embarking on sites with little or some soil. Too much soil can cover up all the stones, requiring you to dig down before you can find any. Embarking on sites with little or some soil (usually) ensures that you can see iron ores from the surface, if there are any.
  • Even if you don't find any on the surface, there's almost always some iron present. If you can't find any on the surface, dig down a bit, and see if you find some. If there's even one vein, there's many more, often 50 to 60 veins per 4x4 map.
  • Try embarking over multiple biomes to increase your chances of finding iron.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

Don't just rely on the embark screen information, send out somedwarf to find it.

Instead of using the standard world generator, I recommend using the advanced world parameters.

Editing world params isn't that difficult, you just have to go to the world text file that's in the data/init/ folder. Then inside world_gen.txt you go to any island or region setting you want and set the mineral scarcity to 100. You can also change the savagery, the amount of vampires, necromancers, megabeasts and so on. Beware making it too high or it will kill out civilizations. There's also temperature stuff, increasing volcano numbers, and number of starting civs.

Lower scarcity means higher amount of minerals and less normal stone, but at 100 there's still a lot of flux stone. So you'll be able to make steel still on a lot of embarks.

In my experience embarking on the side of a mountain usually will have iron in it. They're absolutely filled with metals.

DFhack has a prospect command before you embark to see what minerals are there. Do "prospect all"

I just struck pyrite 2 minutes ago.  :P
