Game Maker Studio - Let's Make Games
« on: December 21, 2014, 07:20:42 pm »

Anybody else tinkering with this? I used to enjoy working with QBasic back in the '90s, and before that making choose your own adventure style books, or my own board games. But I was never really that strong in the technical department, being more interesting in the creation side of things. Seems I don't have as much of an excuse now not to enjoy making my own games, what with Game Maker studio etc. being so cheap and user friendly.

Anybody else using it? Seems like there are lots of good youtube tutorials available, and I've already got my little sprite guy moving about in eight directions.

Trying to keep in mind that I need to finding the core gameplay experience as early as possible and build from there. No grand ideas or giant projects. Maybe I can share something in a few weeks.

I've played with it quite a bit, though not Studio quite as much as GM7 or 8, but I'm still a bit knowledgeable. GML is practically the only programming/scripting language that has embedded itself in my mind, as I can easily pick it back up unlike, say, C++.

I've made a couple of mostly incomplete games with it, too.

What's the difference between 8 and studio? 8 has more functionality because you have to pay for it?

Studio has more functionality, in addition to the cross-platform and monetization features, which aren't in the previous versions(IIRC). I prefer 8, personally, because I like the lighter coloured UI and the fact that it isn't really really stupid with how its window works. (There, for instance, if you click to focus Studio and hit the edge where you'd click to resize, the window gets stuck resizing until you click again. Also it won't actually maximize.) That doesn't mean I'd use 8 over Studio, though.

Turns out that Game Maker Studio Professional is on Christmas sale right now at a hefty 60% off. $40 instead of $100.
