is there a way to see when a female is pregnant?

No, apart from saving, waiting nine months, and loading back the save.

Unless dfhack has a tool for it, but I don't think so.

I inquired over on the DFHack thread and it turns out you can see if a unit is pregnant with DFHack. It has a few steps though:
1) Highlight the unit you want to check (from the unit list, or with [v], etc.)
2) Type gui/gm-editor into the DFHack window.
2) In DF, scroll down to the line that says "relations" and press Enter.
3) Now the first line is "pregnancy_timer". If this number is anything other than 0, the unit is pregnant.

Ta-da! 
I want to look into making a GUI script sort of thing to show this, as a learning experience, so if I get anywhere with that I'll post it.

Honestly I'd be thrilled to have a way to track pregnancies in-game, but I can see why Toady didn't.  All the soccer moms would throw a shit fit over perceptibly pregnant women going into battle while drinking like a thirsty fish.

I disagree with your last argument. Pregnant women already go into battle while drinking like a thirsty fish and no "concerned mothers" are throwing tantrums over it in the forum ?

Nor do people come into masses and call us baby killers or kitten killers just because it happens ?

This is an indie game, not a mainstream game... this ain't Mortal Kombat/Doom VS the 90's moral guardians.

But, y'see, you pretty much can't tell if they're pregnant by looking at stuff in the game.  It's like in Wuthering Heights where the girl just, out of the blue, dies in childbirth despite nothing being mentioned about it earlier.  You have to sit down and play the game for a bit to see what's going on.   

On the other hand, Toady has apparently expressed that he wants to keep sexual stuff as discreet as possible, and pregnancy is usually linked with sex.

Nonsense. "Soccer moms" don't even know that DF exists.

What ? Pregnancy doesn't have a tenth of the taboos that sex has, and it's not considered improper to talk to small children about pregnancy.

Besides, pregnancy should be visible by a simple indicator. At least in the later stages when it is obvious.

I do agree that pregnancy should have an in-game indicator, even if it's just a line in the dwarf's description.

Is there a way to determine which dwarves in a fortress are soccer moms?  If I could figure that out I'd put them in their own squadron and put them on the front lines.  I'm sure they'd kick butt...
