So I Accidentally Created a Massive World
« on: December 18, 2014, 05:07:45 pm »

Man, it's been a long time since I've played. I bought myself a new computer as a sort of christmas gift, and to see how good it was I downloaded DF and decided to make an ideal world.

It chugged along. The map took up the entire screen. After 31 one tries it finally decides it wants to continue into history simulation.

Then, the screen starts jumping all over. What I thought was a sea turns out to be a lake. I don't even recognize the parts of the map it's showing me at this point.

After about an hour of chugging, it finally finishes. I decided to look at my params and it says that the world size is massive. Woops.

I'm not sure I understand why this is a "Whoops." The rejections are due to the generated map not meeting the criteria set in the parameters, could be anything from not enough rivers present, to too many regions. The map will be zoomed and take up the entire screen, no matter how big the map is. It is also normal for the screen to jump from location to location as the history gets generated, it's just jumping to some recent "interesting" event, I think.

In short, you've just described a fairly normal session of world gen.

...I did read the description thinking "yep, sounds like a normal world generation to me". I love big worlds.

Yep... I almost always generate the largest setting of worlds to ensure the highest possible number of my favorite embark locations:

- Within two squares of a goblin settlement
- At least a section of no aquifer
- Preferably shallow and deep metals (to avoid the all lead/zinc curse... I'm looking at you, Hatchetthreaded)
- Sparse or no vegetation
- No trees (usually)

This, combined with embarking with a single pick and anvil, pretty much guarantees the maximum level of ridiculousness in getting the fort set up.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

Large worlds are awfully laggy in DF2014 though.

I used to always gen medium worlds, but my FPS couldn't handle it past 5 years or so.  I miss them a lot.
