Dwarf with smashed finger not going to hospital
« on: December 06, 2014, 12:35:42 pm »

One of my dwarves, a mason, had her finger smashed in a fight with a magma crab, according to Dwarf Therapist. In game, though, she shows no intention of going to the hospital and is just carrying on with her life. I am worried that she will die of infection, but she does not seem to be taking any notice except a small unhappy thought.

If this has any effect, she was injured before the hospital was built.

I think it is normal. I have a bunch of dorfs who has red parts running around normaly.
Maybe the wounds are just minor to them.

It probably will heal on its own. As long as there isn't a cut there shouldn't be an infection either.

If you get a Chief Medical Dwarf the Health tab should appear in the Status screen and you can check if she needs any treatment.

Whenever I've had smashed fingers, I've had pools of pus dotting the landscape (how can you even produce that much pus?) and they never really fully healed, but they never caused much impairment either.

Try your best to get soap and clean water for washing the wound, because pus is just nasty.

There is nothing on the dwarf's health tab at all.

The wound is classed as a "laceration" on Dwarf Therapist, but nothing shows in game.

Might just be a DT problem.

When she falls asleep someone will take her to the hospital if it warrants treatment (she would be "resting" as opposed to sleeping), otherwise it's probably nothing to worry about

If it's only the bone that is smashed then it's normal. Smashed bones do not make the affected dwarf head for hospital, as there is no method known to dwarf-kind to heal it other than by splints or gypsum casts. He probably already has either of those.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

We have some splints, but no gypsum.

Might just be a DT problem.

Incidentally, my Dwarf Therapist lists several dwarves as having an infection when there is no evidence of it in any in-game screens. They've all been cleaned and are healing with no further treatment, so your issue may very well be DT's reporting - or even more likely, a "minor" injury that the dwarf just doesn't need treatment for.
