Back on topic, I don't think it would be that hard for Toady to allow the player to geld an animal from its preferences screen, much in the same way butchering can work.
It's so easy he's already done it.
Would it be possible to provide the steps for that, please? The only time I go near Preference is because it's the only spot where you can assign the trained animals... And even then it sometimes assigns to the wrong one if you forgot to leave that menu between Dwarves... :-\

Gelder was killed by a bunny :-( I will reembark with cats (for skin, bones, non grazers)
Experiment ends

Yea I don't know how to do that either. I didn't even know there was a screen in the vanilla game that told you the sexuality of the animal.

Might be wrong but I think he meant [p]rofessions in the view menu where you can assign the creature for butchering.

Nothing to it, with [v]iew you can highlight the individual animal on the map go to [p]rofessions and then you have the option to hit S to ready for slaughter or X to ready for gelding on males. It's good when you want to be sure you're selecting the right one.

Okay, but that's still only description, right? To actually assign the correct male, we need to be able to see all the details...

Yeah... I'm leaning towards "nicknaming animals would solve a lot of issues". Especially if you use Dwarf Therapist...which isn't updated to this version yet. *shrugs*

Ah well. Thanks for the information. :) At the very least that's a better way to butcher the leaner females easily.

To add something yet nothing at all to this conversation, the orientation values are not percentages.
5:200:750 are as good values as 5:20:75, for example.

Civilian squads: a suggestion regarding Dwarf Therapist, maintaining stock levels, independent workshop-usage and the military screen.

It's an option on the screen for THAT animal. You get to it by "v" selecting the specific creature (or choosing them from the game menu and "z"ooming to them). There isn't any other information more specific than what is available there for you on that animal specific screen already.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Right. So it doesn't help you see orientation and such (which Dwarf Therapist does).

[Just a heads up, I'll be disconnecting my internet in a bit more than a week's time, so it's pretty much a moot point for me unless 40.20 does up before then and give the "nickname pets" option by then...]

Whoot! Dwarf Therapist 30.1 fixed this. You can now geld from DT, which allows you to ensure you're not doing the wrong animals.

(Also, it'll let you know if you have any breedable males who are worth breeding after all the non-breedable ones are gelded and you then check in Dwarf Fortress itself for the "unmodified" males.)
