Hmm, I always just wrote it off as cave adaptation when one of my dwarfs vomited at the entrance but the refuse stockpile is not far away. Coming to think of it, not all of them were flashing and it stopped once I put all my civilians in the military and trained their discipline.

I'll make sure to keep an eye out for that! Meanwhile I can highly recommend to use the trick with the pumps and statue garden anyway. Toughens up your idlers if nothing else. ;)

find the corpse, dump it, atom-smash it, problem solved.

I found that statue garden outside are not enough to clear cave adaptation, it just adds more vomit :(

I actually celebrated the moment when my entire engraved above-ground meeting hall was painted green wall to wall, because I didn't start playing back when cave adaptation was fully enabled.

The amusement I get from the spectacle of dorfs running downstairs to the food stockpile, grabbing a snack, barfing on it, leaving a trail of vomit as they head to their dining room, horking on the chair and table, sitting down to eat, and then vomiting all the way back to whatever they were doing has yet to fade.

Ooooooh so thats why there has been so much vomit. I had been thinking it was this one guy with a infection but cave adaptation makes more sense given the copious amounts of vomit.
