I recently noticed that my ranged sqaud is only training one(and sometimes two) dwarf at a time. At first I thought this was because of the lack of ammo. But after creating an additional 90x25 bolts the problem still persists. Then I thought it was the lack of crossbows and or quivers, but all marksdwarves have both of them assigned and equipped. Then I noticed that even though I have assigned 1000 bolts to the squad, they only have 4 stacks of 25 bolts assigned to them. That's a total of 100 bolts when they are ordered to have 1000. I have set the squad order to train with at least 5 soldiers at once, all year round. There are four other active archers who have the job "Soldier (no activity)".

Why does this happen, and how can I fix it?

How many archery targets do you have ?

I have five archery targets and all of them are in the same archery range room.

According to the wiki :

Unlike other rooms, archery ranges only include the archery target from which they were defined - if you have multiple targets in one area, each one must be designated as its own archery range, even if this causes them to overlap.

That might be a cause ?

I actually had this for a while trying to fix it but later undid it because I didn't think it helped, and I didn't know that there was actually a bug that was fixed by doing that. I will try setting them all as their own range again though.

Doing this worked sort of, they are now training in groups of two. :/ But something else, I want them to use wooden bolts for training, and iron bolts for real combat. But when I set iron bolts to be used in combat AND training, they train. When I set iron bolts to be used only in combat, and wooden bolts for training, they don't train.

Edit: I don't know why but suddenly they're training in groups of five now. Thanks for the help!

yea that's bugged afaik. You have to use the same for both. You could switch what they could use right before battle, but they may or may not pick up the new ones.

I would love it if this was fixed.
