1000 Dwarves
« on: December 11, 2014, 03:44:09 am »

Hi, I have played DF for a long time but I never saw anyone perform an experiment like this, probably because it would cause an unplayable fort.
Anyway, basically what I'm asking is has anyone ever tried to have a large amount (1000) of dwarves like this?
Would it be possible and if so, what would one have to do/sacrifice to make something like this playable? (20-30 FPS) and would anyone like to do an experiment like this and tell us here?

Not playable for me.
I tried 900 or so goblins (use dfhack to embark inside their capital) and the game almost frozen.

Yeah I know it's almost impossible since my game starts to drop to 15 FPS when I only have 200 dwarves but it would be interesting to talk about and if there was a slim chance to make it work.

In DF2012 I managed to run for a while a fort with 700 dwarved, but the FPS was really too low. Also applying usual FPS friend maneuvers, like atom-smashing old clothes and pets, keeping everything clean and tidy etc... the rate went terribly slower as the time was passing. With this release i fear that it would be complrtely unplayable.

2x2 embark. Strict use of burrows. Turn off weather and temperature. Disable caverns, probably the magma layer too. You might also want to turn off invaders. No aquifers. No rivers or streams. No livestock. All pets caged. And no trade depot. That might be just enough to keep your game playable.

Not to mention that the job micromanagement would be a NIGHTMARE.

With that amount of dwarfs, I doubt you even need micromanagement.

Just enable all labors on all dwarfs!

It's not like a decrease of efficiency is going to be noticeable or anything.

80 dwarves is already too much to micromanage, why would you get 1000 dwarves ?

The larger population that your fortress has the more important smaller game mechanics become. Making food is fine and dandy, however you are going to start needing to make clothes constantly... and be sure to take care of your garbage constantly too. You have to do everything in your power to take care of FPS pit falls... and its because of those FPS drops that make this impossible right now. There are some work arounds that could be implemented to dwarf fortress that would keep everything as is and wouldnt take away from the game play, but drop fps some. However this isn't a game its a simulation, so yea.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

I've played with 500 dwarves. Apart from the difficulty of getting the food industry started, it was quite slow. Not unenjoyable on a small embark, more dwarves means more labor, so less fps is more manageable. Clothes is also an issue, but if you can get the food, you're set. I recommend bringing at least 100 seeds, maybe as much as 250. I wasted all of my points (which I vastly increased) on armor / weapons (I was invading a zombie infested area).

Nope.  My current fort is a 2x2 with most of what you said here already so I can bring my save from home to work and stil be playabe.  Tho I ven have a 150 pop cap.  At home with a very beefy gaming rig I sustain about 40fps which is great, but at 200 dorfs even with most of whats listed it still drops to 20and under depending on what actively happening at that minute.  No way even with the additional stuff listed like turning off invaders and rivers would yhou get anywhere close to 900 and be playable
