Release paranoia!
« on: December 03, 2014, 08:20:51 am »

So many releases , I can't even manage to start up a fort before Toady quickcoder brings out a new update with features and bug fixes.
I'm starting to get really scared , whenever I've started getting something up and going he brings another update with tons more stuff , soon we will see Dwarven inns with dart throwing and fun involving darts hitting dorfs in the ear :P

So much to do , so little time.

I think I need to put some more money into Toady's pocket , they definitely deserves it...

Aren't most of the releases compatible with older saves? Or have I got it the wrong way around, where most of the releases *aren't* compatible with older saves...

Ahhh~ She looked into your eyes,
And saw what laid beneath,
Don't try to save yourself,
The circle is complete.

No not all of the saves are compatible, the RAWs have changed over time, and you'll be missing features if you upload an old fort under a new version.

The last 16 releases or so have been save-compatible with the releases before them, and the only reason that it isn't the last 18 releases is save corruption happening. Other than that, you could move your save folder over to the next version, losing only the few raw changes (most of those could be merged into the save raws if you know what you're doing) and world-gen features (like two poles)/features requiring regeneration (entities with stepladders). Toady tends to try to keep the game save compatible. I would expect some breaks in compatibility during the upcoming development plans, however - job priorities should be save, but after that, it'll just get harder to keep saves updated with all the incoming stuff.

'Aye, most of the releases are backwards compatible , but I tend to start over again in case there's something that's not working and I'd rather leave a clean bug report than having to consider the possibility that the old save had something inn it that broke the game somehow.
