Nicknaming animals?
« on: December 01, 2014, 01:04:00 pm »

Is there any way to nickname animals? I'm having trouble keeping track of who is pastured where late in the game.  The branch of Dwarf Therapist I use has a tab for animals that lets me give nicknames, but those names don't appear in the actual game anywhere.  Any solutions out there?

I'm not aware of any, but since DT assigned names are retained after a save and restore, they exist in the game; they are just not displayed. It ought to be possible to use DFHack to get at nicknames, though.

DFHack includes a "rename" command, and it should work just fine with animals.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

If you're using the default DFHack keybindings (in dfhack.init), this should be accessible by selecting a unit and pressing Ctrl-Shift-N. (Ctrl-Shift-T should allow you to change professions, although I don't remember if/how this works with animals.)

There was a typo in the siegers' campfire code. When the fires went out, so did the game.
