Author Topic: Undomesticated, trained animals.... will they forget whilst following owner?  (Read 3163 times)

So I was randomly looking through my animal list, as I had remembered that I needed to train my captured Giant Cave Swallow, when all of the sudden I saw that I had captured a GIANT CAVE SPIDER near the entrance to the caverns. I checked the reports, because I was sure that I had lost several dwarfs, but thankfully I had not! He merely walked into a trap.

So I trained him, and then a child named Kadol adopted him. His name is now "Shem Uthirvucar." I'm ecstatic, because of the obvious "I caught a freakin' GCS" and that now I can get a proper silk farm going.

However... my question is:

As my little Shem is following his owner, can he still be trained as he is walking, by my trainers? Or will he gradually forget his adoration for little Kadol, and then seek to suck her bodily juices out until she is nothing but a withered husk?

Can't cave spiders only be adopted if you specifically enable adoption in the animal menu? Why would you do that?

Burrow the child along with your most skilled animal trainer, into a training zone in the dining room/statuary/whatever and enable training.

That's what I'm thinking.

Silk farms and web traps

Oh yes, I know about those my friend.

I was just wanting to know, if my GCS, or any trained animal that is a pet, can be "maintenance" trained without being burrowed.
Since nobody will answer my question, I will assume that nobody knows.

I'll do some !!SCIENCE!! myself, and post the results.

I dont think they will.  Or they always seem to do it late in my forts, when i let the critter walk around unattended.  They may drag them to the designated locations, or wait for the critters to walk themselves over.  Do post

It seems that the spider got trained again.

He was at "Well-Trained" but I checked last night after playing for a few hours, and his training had been upgraded to "Skillfully trained."

he will slip in and out of semi-wild and trained unless he gets neglected for awhile, then he will become wild and that kid is toast.

Just set up your silk farm, I always either put first generation exotics in cages or on chains. The spider will be killed if he attacks someone and then you'll have to catch another one.

There's always a risk of wild-born critters returning to their wild state.  Recently I've had quite a few Benny Hill unicorn chases because of it.  I'm not sure if GCS can have spiderlings without modding, but if they can, you might want to wait around until you find Shem a girlfriend.

My trainer keeps on training him, so I don't see any immediate danger. Of course, I'm always open to !!FUN!! if it comes.
I'm trying to not save scum on this fortress, unless a bug occurs (which did happen in one siege).

I sure hope they can. That'd be pretty sweet.
