What can I do with fruit tree seeds?
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:56:38 pm »

So, I've played Dwarf Fortress for a while.
I played the 0.40.x release earlier this year, and I just downloaded 0.40.18 to play today.
My first fortress is doing really well, but I've got an issue. My seed stockpile is filling up with lots of seeds of fruit trees (persimmon, plum, apricot, apple, etc...). I can't seem to find these specific seeds under the status/kitchen tab to let my cooks cook them. How should I get rid of them? Should I just create a QSP and an atom smasher for these tree seeds?
Thanks!

I think they probably should be cookable, so that may be a bug.  Can you trade them?  That's probably the only other use for them at present since you can't plant them so far as I know.

I haven't tried trading them yet. I hadn't made any booze from fruit when the first caravan came.

No, you can't trade them. I tried, and ended up with empty bags when I tried to trade what was hauled to the trade depot. I don't know if that got rid of the seeds, though, or if they were just emptied on the ground for later collection.

Many fruit tree seeds are poisonous for human(and presumably dwarven) consumption even if cooked, so it's unlikely a bug that they haven't been set as edible.

Others require processing in ways that aren't yet in the game, eg coffee beans, and so are currently useless.

I tend to just designate a seed pile for the useless seeds in an out of the way area and let them accumulate to the species seed cap, then I never need to bother with them again. I do play with the fortress wide seed cap turned significantly up however so it doesn't effect gathering of useful seeds.

I have traded them to the caravan before, although as I didn't want to loose the bags I dumped them to the ground, removed them from the stockpile settings, then reclaimed and hauled them to the depot. You should be able to just trade them in the bags however, I know you certainly could in earlier versions.

I go through the stocks menu and just set them to dump, dwarves dump them in my atom smasher without putting the bag in there because the bag is not designated for dumping. Then I smash them, and they are no longer a problem.

Save them for your danger room - apparently 'coinstar' is now lethal. ;)
