Quite frankly, it's not easier to learn DF when you have migrants stumbling around oblivious for reasons out of your control.

This does not often happen unless you have problems that are already pretty bad, so it's disingenuous to use it as reasoning.

Depends on the version, those thoughts seem interesting, but very difficult to regulate unless you carefully plan everything.

Personally, I like the trees, fruits and all that from DF 40.x, if you have the right trees, it can help with finding food for your unexpected 35-50 dwarves waves, when the rest of the fort is already barely not starving.
