Merchants already? How curious...

So, my fortress started at Spring. I set everything up fast as shit, making my carpenter/mason produce beds and doors all day. Autumn arrived and then all the sudden merchants arrived. I was like: "WTF, already?".

As this wasn't enough, there was an announce saying:
"No outpost liason? How curious..."

I mean, what the hell? I like to think that i know that my fortress is growing really slow when migrants come or merchants come and my fortress' bedrooms, dining room, noble's room and work zone aren't finished yet. I think the game is making fun of me  :'(

K. Does anybody know what's happening?

Your civilization is dead or dying. That's when you get the "No liaison, how curious!" Had the same thing happen to me. Prepare yourself to house some royalty. If you are lucky you will only get the king. Or you might get one baron after another dropped into your lap, each one with his own room requirements and mandates.

Got any gold or silver ore? Start mining it. Golden statues are pretty valuable or you can build some weapon traps with spiked silver balls. That works great as well.

Make no hasty decisions though. The queen I got was actually pretty nice and engraved the entire fort, including her own chambers.  She liked shoes and that's something that basically takes care of itself with Workflow and normal wear and tear. The barons are another story though.... ;P

...I embarked with an almost dead dwarven kingdom on purpose, just to experience it, and I know our forts have fallen, but so far no luck.

I had the "No liaision? How curious" comment (and about time too! It was my third or fourth year!), then the next year, everyone arrived, merchants and liaison. I guess this means that the kingdom recovered? I've been expecting nobility ever since, but no one has ennobled. We'll see what happens.

...I did not choose the best embark site, for that matter. No ores until we dug so very far down and the one ore so far? Zinc. Great. Just.... Great. If that dwarf noble ever DOES turn up, they'd better like zinc furniture...

Liaison and merchants will be created after a while, even a king if need be. The created units have no parents or history.

This is absolutely ordinary. Merchants arriving in Autumn has long been the case. What's different is that your fortress doesn't start on the very first day of Spring. If you want a slow start, don't trade much with this first caravan.

As for the early migrants, this is an increase to your workforce. You can finish setting up basic infrastructure faster with them before they actually need them. That is, migrants (and your starting 7 for that matter) arrive with full bellies and well rested - they won't need beds and meals until some time has passed.
