The only dwarf left is the brewer/glassmaker. Do you want him?

All of the starting dwarves have been dorf'd. I'll get to work on the fort.

Here is my Grand Plan!
1. Get through the aquifer.
2. Use the aquifer as a power station
3. Build several pumps near the base of the volcano.
4. Drain the Volcano
5. Start Building the glass fortress
6. Finish the glass fortress.
7. Turn off the pumps
8. Let the Volcano fill back up.
9. Hope it works.

just wondering, where are you going to drain all that magma to?

Maybe this thread would be better in Community forts and stories.

The button on the bottom left of the page will let you move it there.

You know, if you dont mind killing your fps for a while, there is a much simpler solution to rid yourself of exess magma in a volcano.

This is based on the principle that all things that cave in or fall onto semimolten rock are instantaneously and completely destroyed. To carry this out effectivly, turn off pausing on cave-ins.

All that is needed is a water source, probably some wood, and some building blocks. You build an aqueduct a level or so above the surface of the magma over the volcano (this is actualy important, as if the aqueduct is directly on top of the lava, the obsidian will atatch to the aqueduct and not fall) and pump lots and lots of water through it. The water falls onto the lava and makes cave-ins, that fall to the semimolten rock and are destroyed.

This will actualy cause a "hole" in the middle of the lava in the volcano, and the rest of the lava will fall in and be turned into instantly destroyed obsidian as well. It is easy to turn off when done, and restart as needed.

NOTE: I have tested this, and the idea came after this accedentaly happened to me when I started a embark with a volcano that came out under the ocean. I ended the game after it was empty because of the massive lag and the fact that the volcano i had wanted was empty of lava

I want the volcano to be able to fill back up again after my fort is built.
All of the magma is going to be pumped out the map edge through fortifications (you can designate fortifications on the map edge, but you can't mine.)

If anybody wants to try this too, go ahead. The save is at the beginning of the thread. Feel free to do it anyway you want.

My method will allow the volcano to refill. I have used it to build a pump-stack that starts deep in the volcano so when I drain a good amount it still pumps up rapidly.

If you want to use your method, feel free to do so. The save is in the first post. I know that my way will work too.

edit:I can't seem to find the aquifer anywhere, I guess that means massed windmills.

DS managed to do this in Roomcarnage (which I recommend you google and read because it's awesome).

Basically what he did was breach the volcano and dump the excess magma into the caverns, which is a very good way to rid yourself to extra magma (it either flows over the maps edge, evaporates, or forms shallow magma pools all over the cavern which is awesome in itself). After the volcano is drained, you can build whatever you want in it. To refill the tube, simply close the drain into the caverns.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this method is considerably faster than others because it uses gravity to assist the magma draining out of the volcano (it can fall instead of be pumped) and pressure mechanics (which DO work for magma, see the thread about the pressurized magma cannon) spread the magma extremely fast into the caverns.

I heartily recommend reading Roomcarnage, not just for the "volcano advice" but also because it's a freaking good read.  It's outright eerie at times.
