I briefly had sea otters. I caught a pregnant mother. But someone let the babies out while they were untamed and she's the only one left :( I'm hoping to get a male with my traps to get that going again.

I am still looking to start a giant sperm whale farm, one day...

If you see any whale or basking sharks, you may want to try capturing a mated pair of those too.  Good meat from them and would test proof of concept for your breeding chamber.

I have a fortress that is full of emus, badgers, and wombats, with a few kiwis... they just enter the map in swarms and get caught in cages... I also have giant cave swallows, though making them breed is a bit slow going... though I just broke into a new cavern level, so I may get some crazier stuff soon...

I also had a fortress before that had a gray langur breeding program going, and I found another site that has giant gray langurs, so I could make another monkey farm.

My current fort has ibexes pass through it every so often. I'm gonna try to catch a group of them for domestication. I hear they're good eatin' if you can get the space for them.

Not necessarily a strange animal, but in one fort I was pretty much up to my eyeballs in draltha and giant toads.  I didn't even realize giant toads could breed!  In another fort, I recently modded unicorns to be tameable, so I have a big feather wood pen with 4 unicorns in it.

Oh I will, I keep an eye out for the smaller versions, as well. It would be great practice, and I may never see the giant sperm whales. I haven't seen anything particularly large yet. There are some rays I'd like to catch, assuming I can get my fort back on its feet. It's on pause until dfhack is up to date though, my fps is fairly low atm.

Badger, I embarked in a good biome just to get unicorn meat. Do they breed without any sort of modding? Or will I just have to hunt them in the wild?

Nearly everything.

Once had a fortress with 1000 animals, 400 of which being ravens for no apparent reason. I can tell you when i let a siege come through, amusement was had.

I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

Not by default, but it's a pretty simple copy-paste job.  Go to the creature_standard.txt in the raws, find the unicorn (this might take a bit of scrolling), and add [PET] or [PET_EXOTIC] among the tags.

My animals aren't that weird or exotic, but I do have quite a handful of different ones in one fortress. I had the luck of buying a breeding pair of dingoes from those pesky hippies before I pissed them off for good. Then another stroke of luck I managed to capture a breeding pair of black bears and a breeding pair of kangaroos (and surprisingly some of my dwarfs actually like them and have adopted them as pets!), so now I have a rather nice varying zoo at my hands. My cage traps also lately caught some sea otters and ravens, but I'm not completely certain yet if I want to keep them.

I...honestly don't remember.  I'll say "no" just to be on the safe side.

You can add [PET]/[PET_EXOTIC] to an existing game, you just have to edit the RAWs in the data/save/(whatever your save is called)/raw/objects folder. As long as you avoid changing ID tags or adding new materials it should work fine.
