Any way to accelerate time?
« on: December 26, 2015, 12:43:58 am »

I'm curious if there is a way in game or if it is possible with other tools to take a world that I have played in and speed up time like it does during world-gen.
I want to see if my actions, or rather failure to act, will have any long term consequences. I could just play through and wait like normal but that could take a lot of playing.

As far as I know (I may be wrong), here is the fastest method I can think of:
1) Go to the main menu and select Adventurer mode
2) Wait for it to load, noting the calendar moving forward as world-gen progresses (should be 2 weeks)
3) Make a random adventurer and instantly retire it (or however you may wish to dispose of them ...)
4) Repeat

Or you could make a fortress and just let your computer run for however long you like without interfering, or until your dwarves starve to death, whichever comes first.

A named spider who died centuries before I even played was helping rescue kids I had in fact rescued.

I guess it could work. I had like a hundred years in mind though and if I used that method it would still take a long time.

I don't play adventure mode often but when you fast travel doesn't time pass? You could just fast travel across the map a lot if that is the case.

That would probably be slower than running a fort at 100 fps. Sleeping may give you a similar speed. My advice would be either to see whether dfhack can do it somehow or run a 1x1 fort on a glacier with the fps cap removed and a strict pop cap of 1.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

I've read about forts with FPS of up to 1600, on ok computers, which are just boxes in the desert, with a clothes, food and drink farm.

You can turn off all game pauses in announcement.txt, so it will run non-stop.
Then you can turn off temperature, weather, caveins in init.txt to maximize FPS.
Now get yourself a VPS or some machine that can run it for a few days and watch how long will it take for everyone to die.

We did something similar at some point, having a fortress run it's course for almost a week on one player's (spare) PC, with others having access with dfterm to connect and play it at any point. It did not go well, we had to revert to older (in most cases last) save quite a few times.

Masterwork has a time accelerator/decelerator using DFHack.

Some things seem to happen only during worldgen, so it would be great in future DF versions to have an option after retiring adventurer/fortress to worldgen more time on the same world to see how events will unfold after you left your fort or adventurers mark on the status quo.

  • create an adventurer
  • get captured in a cage
  • relax and see time passing
Unless you play GRAZER adventurer you should not starve in that cage.

I'm fairly certain that cage-traps are disabled for adventure mode.

Set this to NO if you do not want traps to affect you in adventure mode.  Cage traps are always disabled for now.

Ah. DFhack might be able to do it, then.
