what are those teal X's?
« on: November 15, 2014, 11:09:02 am »

Lately sometimes my dwarves and even animals will flash with a teal X. I thought maybe it was due to mental distress, but I don't think my cats are getting stressed out. I don't remember this from before, so what does it mean?

Also, I am getting a nonstop error message from my dwarves about not being able to store something in a stockpile because it is inaccessible. It is driving me mad and I have forbid just about anything they can't reach (there are a few drowned bodies) is there a way to figure out what is doing it quickly?

X Stunned: Dwarves can be stunned because of pain, which may lead to unconsciousness. Cave spider bites also cause periodic stunning. May also occur from a fall, usually from a dodge or a cave-in, or as a result of minor cave adaptation.

hmm, wonder why the cats have it then. I'm guessing cave adaption for the dwarves, I've noticed an unusual amount of vomit here and there.

I'm going to slaughter most of my cats with an atom smasher anyway, they are getting too numerous.

oh! If I have a dwarf that is too injured to do... anything, and he is spamming me when he tries to store items he owns etc, what is the best way to stop that?

I have found some of the inaccessible stuff, but the message still pops up periodically.

While atom smashing them is an entertaining choice, I usually go for butchering them all except for 2 females and a male, to keep the production of ☼Cat meat roasts☼ going.

I don't know how cats could be stunned though, my best guess is that they somehow got exposed to cave spider venom(or worse, GIANT cave spider venom). If this is the case, it should wear off soon. And for the injured dwarf, the general solution is to build a hospital, assign a chief medical dwarf, enable healthcare professions on some dwarves, and build at least one bed and one table and put them next to each other in the hospital area. A detailed tutorial on setting up hospitals can be found here.

Finally, for the cancellation spam, make sure that the dwarf trying to access it has a clear path to the item(is he locked up somewhere? Is he assigned to a burrow?), and that the item is not being hauled or otherwise in use by another dwarf. If the item is a dead body stuck in water, then they cannot be accessed unless the water is removed(for example, to access a drowned dwarf in a reservoir the reservoir must be emptied below 3/7, or for a river, when the water freezes, the body will dissapear).

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

I recommend butchering and eating the cats. Not only do I love my ☼cat leather armour☼, but they are remarkably agile beasts, and could probably dodge most atom smashers if given any warning at all... Besides, having one or two of them keeps the vermin down.

there's so many though, I'm not sure I can move the meat fast enough for it not to rot and kill off enough of them.

I have a hospital, and my duke does all the medical care. Somehow this dwarf just doesn't want to go at all. I finally turned off all jobs on him.

It's multiple people that can't reach whatever it is. I've forbid everything unreachable I can find. I still get it, though less often.

You didn't recently kill a forgotten beast that had deadly blood or other contaminants your dwarves might be suffering from right?

I've killed a ton of forgotten beasts, and some did have venomous bites or secretions, but that was long enough ago that I don't think it should still be affecting anyone.

I am mass slaughtering the cats now anyway. Half the meat seems to rot before It gets stored, but my fps is doing a little bit better.

I wonder if channeling a few levels to get the sky open to my fort will fix the cave adaption, and can I put a floor on it and still get the effect, as in, does it work like it does with farming?

Well, cave adaptation is an effect of lack of sunlight, so it should work, but you're unprotected in during the work of installing the roof. I don't know if first building a roof "in the open" and then opening up the top fortress level by removing the cave roof would let sunlight down, though. Also, you can only light up a single level, so the deep explorations would still be sunless.

the fortress fell to ruin anyway. It lasted so long, I thought it would last forever. Then this dinosaur that could web showed up. It was the webbing that did it. My soldiers fought gloriously, and wounded the hell out of the thing. In the end, the mayor and a child were all that was left, trapped in cages that were meant for invaders.

I thought about shutting down DF and playing from my last save, but it will make for great engravings and statues when my next fort gets going.
