Mountain gnomes
« on: November 15, 2014, 06:04:33 am »

Massive group of grey g's. Freaked out for a moment I thought they were goblins, but they were mountain gnomes. Apparently weak small humanoids capable of horrifying dwarves while stealing large amounts of booze.

Should I kill them, capture them, leave them, or what?

Edit: Ordered militia to kill them. Took them a while to start killing, even though one of the swordsdwarves was right on top of his target, he didn't do anything. Right now there's 4 out of the 15 gnomes still alive. What's worse, they collectively drank 100 units of wine that was property of the human trade caravan. They left instantly. I don't think they were happy, that wine was quite expensive.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

I don't usually kill them unless they cause a lot of trouble but if I catch some they go into a zoo.

Sometimes I build them a little room to live in and link their cages to a lever to let them out in their new sealed chamber. Why? I don't really have a reason for that.

According to the wiki you can dump out gnomeblight by forbidding it and moving the barrel, so maybe you could dump it out in the entrance to your booze stockpile and make the gnome melt as they walk in... or just use traps, which would probably work better and be more reliable, but wouldn't have the same effect as having them literally rot away as they approach your booze...

According to hearsay, you can not only eat these guys, you can tame and farm them.

The weirdest animal I've ever raised for meat was in 34.11, when I had a mountain gnome farm.

Seriously, they have [CAN_LEARN] but not [CAN_SPEAK], and for some reason if it's intelligent but can't talk to you, your dwarves are happy to eat it...

...You could be on to a really good thing here.

now I wish mountain gnomes were on my map. That sounds like fun.

What I don't understand is, aren't trolls not intelligent? I can't tame or slaughter them.

Trolls are sufficiently intelligent not to be butcherable. The only useful things you can do with a captured troll is to get it to fight other monsters (unwanted nobles can be counted as monsters for this purpose) and as fighting or target practice for your militia. I forgot you can also use them for creature logic (which I haven't yet tried).
