A random thought occurs to me...
« on: November 09, 2014, 01:31:57 am »

Just now, I had a very strange thought.

Goblins going all klepto for other people's things all seem to have one thing in common-- they are all accessible by a surface land route.
Dwarves are able to trade with each other using "Deep routes"-- So, if I were to "almost completely" bottle up the whole fortress, leaving ONLY underground access via the cavern layer (with suitable protections), then retire, then the site should theoretically be immune to goblin invasions, right?

Has anyone ever scienced this?

I don't believe the game considers whether a structure is actually accessible, only that the site that the structure is located at is accessible, because apparently worldgen snatchers and thieves can just teleport items/babies through solid rock.

Wouldn't they just mill around on the surface?

So there is no hard science on this yet?

Fantastic-- after I get this fortress where I want it, (so I can retire it), I will embark right next to a goblin site we are at war with, and establish a deep-site, to see what happens after a retire.

I do believe its frequently possible for structures within procedurally generated forts to contain dwarves and goods but not be connected to an entrance. I suspect these folks will be kidnapped all the same.

There is essentially zero chance that will matter. The specific tiles of a fortress don't even exist yet in worldgen until you as a player embark there.

Yes, the tiles of a retired fort exist, but why would Toady ever code a completely different set of algorithms for a retired fort versus a normal dwarf settlement? That would be double the work for no apparent reason. They almost surely use the same code as not-yet-generated-tiles sites, which would necessarily not consider access routes within the fort.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
