Zink is not really much of a use for weapons. ...
Just to clarify, an artifact can be made out of "inappropriate" materials.  So you could have an axe made of soap or a throne made of dog leather.

It doesn't go quite that far. You can have weapons and armour made from any metal, you can have just about any item (including axes and thrones) made from bone, but you can't get soap in artefacts and leather artefacts will only be the standard leatherworks stuff - clothes, bags, shield etc., never weapons, armour or furniture.

Zinc is a relatively light and very soft metal; it's a really poor material for weapons, so bad in fact that the artefact bonus still won't make it worthwile.

Sure. You can put it in stonefall traps, on top of retracting bridges suspended over walkways, build architectural traps (drowning chambers, floors suspended from columns, etc.) out of it, fire it from catapults, make mechanisms out of it for various traps, make zinc minecarts and use them to run over goblins, and probably some other things I'm forgetting. You just have to enable it from the economic stones screen.

Can sphalerite be used to make melee weapons?
Sure, if you mod the game to allow it.

No. You can only get zinc, brass and nickel silver out of it, all of which can only be forged into furniture (exclusive of strange moods).

I was super sad to learn that having a dwarf make an artifact from a given material doesn't allow the replication of the feat, would be a nice boon if you could replicate lead/gold/plat war hammers or foreign weapons/armor that come from a mood, even if only that dwarf would be able to make said item, at least for the non-possessed moods, heck, I'd trade the instant legendary status in some cases for the new crafts option being opened up.

There are loads of other things you can use to defend yourself besides soldiers, the wooden weapons probably won't save you , the only wooden weapons worth using are wooden crossbows... I recommend glass trap components in weapon traps for metal-lacking sites, and using weapons and armor taken from goblins until you have enough to melt down into a supply of metal... Those first sieges should be small enough to handle for only a few poorly armed dwarves if they have enough training...

As for zinc, it's not a "weapons grade" metal, so apart from artifacts or constructed traps, you will probably want to treat it like you have no metal until you find iron, silver, or copper... still, it's good for things like bars and minecarts if you feel like making a drowning trap or minecart defenses...

That would be pretty cool.

Perhaps as an alternative type of mood.

Put it in the suggestions forum.

It's a dwarf.  Their natural habitat is "trapped on the wrong side of a wall".

Flinging children halfway across the map to land in magma is good, wholesome fun, but extramarital reproduction?  Why, that's just unseemly!
