Charter or Satellite?

I mentioned this briefly in the happy thread, but atleast I think it warrants it's own thread: I live with my Mom, she has the Charter cable package for internet, tv, etc. She's getting increasingly pissed off at them over some cost issues. She wants me to look into the possibility of getting Dish Network or DirecTV, but I don't know a damn thing about them.

Does anyone here have some decent points of view on these providers?

Satellite internet is generally shit for upload speeds, decent-but-not-great for download (weather permitting).

IIRC satellite also has very high ping.

And also often jitter, which screws a lot of things up more than the high ping does.
