You can put a giantass engine on a small one.

Large ones use warp.

Where are the engines getting their reaction mass? Are they... shooting magma out of the back of the ship at near-superluminal velocities?

They're shooting ionized particles.

Very slow compared to warp but good for course correction.

Warp is a standard on anything frigate sized or larger.

When you get to planetship sized, they tend to use wormholes and warp.

There should be a forum game specifically based around designing backstories.
Eventually the world that might be built would either be a mess or a masterfully designed masterpiece with more entries than mass effect.

Ionized particles have really weak thrust. And they are constrained to a low thrust because ionized particles repel each other. Increasing the voltage past a certain point leads to arcing across the grid. Through the vacuum of space. So it's not just an engineering limitation, it's a hard limitation unless you use a different ion thruster design.

I remember a thread on Spacebattles discussing what it would be like if Earth had the surface area of the sun (handwaving away obvious physics violations). Sadly the thread died even though the concept was really interesting and some of the initial worldbuilding was spot-on.

Its not going to go very fast with the engines. Warp is faster but somewhat imprecise, the thrusters would be for nudging it into a better orbit over the course of a decade or five. Planetsized ships tend to stay out of inner parts of a system where warp gets harder for larger things Planatoid sized ships are the only guildcarrier style ships that would have thrusters. Planetsized would not have thrusters.

Warp is the primary travel method.

Combat ships have conventional engines for dodging launched projectiles by changing their trajectory a tad.

Mining ships have conventional for the obvious reason of mining.

Other ships tend to have conventional.

All ships of frigate sized and larger have some form of warp.

Smaller ships are just conventional and get carried in frigate or larger.

Is there still space in this? If not, how do I sign up for the waitlist?

Just make a chara sheet based off the other people's.

I'm pretty sure it can handle more then 8, soooo gonna check with the other GM and make sure he's okay with it. Waitlist can happen if he isn't.

Hey, guys.

I have some good news, and some bad news. The bad news is that I've decided to drop this game because I don't have the time or the interest to maintain it reliably over such a huge scale, and besides, I've got a rather enormous backlog of work and other pursuits to complete, right now. However, Kevak has offered to take on this game himself, with some help from me and some other friends of his, and I've accepted since I feel like he has the level of energy and commitment necessary to do it justice. I also wanted to apologize for making everyone wait for so long due to my procrastinating on this; I owed you guys some kind of explanation or action before, and I'm sorry that I kinda just dropped off the grid and left you wondering what the flip was going on.

So, now that the elephant is out of the room... I'm still not 100% clear on how Kevak plans to tackle this from now on, if he's gonna make a new post or build off of this one, or what. I will say that I'm gonna work with him to make the transition as smooth as possible, though, so you can expect this thing to start as soon as he's ready (and he has said that all he really needs is for his friend(s) to get him some 'art assets' ready for the game). The playerlist is likely to expand beyond 8, also, because of the scale of which this game seems to be getting to, so some waitlisted players are probably going to get full roles once this thing kicks off. So anyone who still wants in, please post your desired characters.

Oh, one more thing: this may very well turn into a full-blown forum game to go into the appropriate section, rather than just an RTD, because RTD's generally aren't that appropriate for high-end strategy games, at least in my experience. You'll know as soon as this is ready to go. Again, sorry to everyone for taking so long, and I hope you have fun once this thing hits launch! Explore, expand, exploit!

Most of the system stuff is sorted out. Only thing needed is some spaceborn art assets. (We don't need ground stuff till later~)

What are you talking about? RtD strategy is some of the most in-depth stuff out there. The whole thing is an exercise in making contingency plans to deal with bad rolls during key moments.

Most of the combat is not luckbased. More design based.

Hitvsmiss has some luck, but not all that much.

If things go wrong, it's because someone messed up or the enemy was smarter.
