Getting dwarves to discover things.
« on: November 01, 2014, 04:37:48 pm »

So, I gen a world 8400 years old, thinking I'd have every gem and metal at my disposal from embark screen and trading. Yeah, no. My dwarves haven't found cassiterite, any diamonds past faint yellow, and no rubies or saphires. They stopped finding things at agates. Only the underground woods, high wood, and pecan tree. Why do my civs never find everything? I had a 100 year old world find every gem but blue diamonds. What can I change to make them more exploratory? And yes, it is a booming, wide spread civ. Not extinct at all.

I think it has more to do with what resources your civilization has available to them from the embark locations of their Fortresses.  Even if Dwarves explore the entire world, if the items aren't physically available on the maps of those fortresses, then I don't think it will be available from the embark screen.

That's what I think, anyway...

If your a civ doesn't have access to these things in their region, then their traders won't have any.

it is partly luck. If your civ hasnt spread into many different biomes, they'll have little variation, especially in trees. So even though they might have spread out quite a bit, they might only touch 2 or 3 biomes

and yes, DF does keep track of what materials and stuff is actually available for each region and if a civilization has discovered it. Elves will always only bring animals they captured in their region, so a tropical tribe won't ever bring you a polar bear etc
