Urist McDyer went on hungerstrike?
« on: November 02, 2014, 11:45:08 am »

My master dyer and expert surgeon has been found dead, dehydrated. This is kind of a riddle since he died within 20 tiles of 700 drink, 2 functioning wells and a stockpile with >100 roasts, cheese and whatnot. He died in his own bed which leads me to believe he was not melancholic. (They tend to wander around aimlessly in my experience.)
His door was open and accessible, no burrow restriction in place and he has no wounds. He just starved himself it seems. Happiness was 51 in therapist. (Last refresh 1 minute before he died.) That's pretty swell for almost dying from dehydration and hunger imo.

Can somebody please shed some light on what might have happened? I could still savescum to investigate further.

(While we will all mourn the loss he was by no way critical to the future of the fortress. I just would like to know what went wrong.)

I know you said he has no wounds, but do you have a hospital?  Perhaps he had something else wrong with him that you couldn't see on the Wounds Screen?

What about the feed patients/Prisoners labor?  Did you disable all of those by chance?

What about empty buckets?  How many of those do you have?

Other than those ideas, you might be right...he might have just given up on life.  It happens.

It happend me twice.
And this is why i have always some jobless healthtakers. Now dorfs sometimes are just getting to bed, even if They are still hungry or thirsty. And They are dehydrating themselfs... if some other dorf doesn't bring water/food.

In my fortress dwarves are dying from old age.
Dwarven wine is a little bit like good chicken soup:  solid at room temperature.

Sounds like he had enough, so he decided to simply lay down and dye.

I'll get my coat.

Did the dwarf leave any relatives? You could use the relations backdoor to take a look at his last thoughts. It could still be an insane dwarf, although the DT mental health readout speaks against it (but i don't know if that's actually still meaningful in .40.14); insane citizens follow roughly the same movement patterns as idlers, oscillating between meeting areas and personal rooms mostly. You might need to poke into the old save to investigate properly, though.

My dyer had no family or friends unfortunately, so:

Savescum time!

FYI, I'm still on 14.13 [r3] of the starter pack because the new font disagrees with my eyes. (I probably should get glasses or quit playing DF all night... *sigh*)

Here are her thoughts:

Her health screen only shows "dehydrated" and "starving". Therapist says she's drowsy as well. (Was to be expected.)

Now to save Private Chasmtrumpet!
My bonecarver was already on the way to give her water but I used "drybucksts" just in case. (Good thinking though!)
I think I might have killed her in the original timeline when I ordered all military and militia squads (that's 60 of my 80 dwarfs) to station in the 3rd cavern and butcher some creeping eyes for experience. That probably canceled the give water job.

I set up 4 dedicated nurses next. (Great idea, thanks!)
Professor Cunningshot took it upon herself to look after my patient and bring her a light snack legendary roast.
Private Chasmtrumpet is feeling better now. Hunger and thirst are gone but she's still drowsy. I'm going to keep an eye on the situation while my military squads (no militia this time!) butcher the creeping eyes.

I'm still at a loss why Private Chasmtrumpet didn't get some food or drink or at least dragged herself to the hospital. We have everything in abundance! 0_o
