Tree roots and monsters!
« on: October 22, 2014, 10:33:40 am »

I have some areas in my fortress that are "roots" from the trees above. Can monsters climb down through those roots and get into my fortress? It's the only thing I can think of why I have trolls slaughtering my farmers during a siege...!

Nope, and in fact if you cut down the tree that owns those roots you'll see that they're just your regular dirt wall with a different description.

Trolls look to be good climbers in this release, maybe it is why your farmers are being slaughtered. Don't you have any leaks in your roof?

Few things come to mind:

1) Creatures can climb now, so if all you have on the surface to lock everything out is a wall with a drawbridge, then they're just climbing up and over the wall.

2) Trolls are building destroyers, so they may be knocking down a door to come inside.

3) Trolls are natural swimmers, so they can path into your fortress through aquaducts that are unsecured, and aquaducts that are unsecured from building destroyers.

Are your farms directly underneath the surface level?

I've had trouble with falling trees/or branches or whatever making holes in the surface layer. So quite often intruders would fall through those directly into my fort.

Or the bastards were shooting my cattle, birds and dorfs from above.

Yes, my farm is directly under the surface level. I went and examined all the squares and I found one that was a hole! This didn't use to be there... I wonder if the "Something crashed on the surface" caused this.  I've had a couple of those happen now, but I can't say one way or another if it was above my farms.

EGADS!  This is a monster invasion, too.  Like 20 trolls and 40 goblins!

Trees just leave holes when they grow for some reason, which I assume is a bug. Climbing isn't really an issue for falling into the fort, they'll do that willingly the moment they smell dwarves inside, but if you have a one z level tall wall with soldiers on it you'll notice climbing very quickly... Interestingly, they don't seem interested in climbing even small walls unless they know there are dwarves on the top/other side...

If you put your underground farm right below the surface level, then you need to also make sure that the surface above has some sort of construction on it to prevent tree growth (surface farms, paved roads, walls/floors, etc).

For safety, you should put down paved roads on the surface anywhere within 5 X/Y distance of the edge of your underground farm.  That will keep any saplings far enough away that the roots won't reach into your underground farm.

The best way to go is to bury your entrance at least 2 or 3 levels below the ground, and everything else under that. Assuming you have the soil layers for farming down there. Which you should. It's what I do now.

How do you get into your fortress if you bury your entrance?

There's a "well" of sorts (A 3x3 hole with a ramp down) that leads to the actual entrance.
