Black Bears
« on: October 25, 2014, 10:12:18 am »

Alright so I snagged some breedable black bears and was curious about what you guys think I should use them for.

I don't particularly need the bones/meat and I have war grizzlies already.

Put them around your entrances. Hand them out as pets. This will provide a layer of protection.

EDIT: HOW THE HELL DID YOU MANAGE TO CATCH GRIZZLIES?!?  I'VE BEEN TRYING SINCE I STARTED THIS GAME, AND I CAN'T CATCH ANY, EVEN WITH FOOD STOCKPILES SURROUNDED BY CAGE TRAPS EVERYWHERE!!!

Breed them and send them to fight en masse.  like 5 assigned to each military dwarf

Chain them around entrances or the edges of the map to detect thieves and ambushes. But since you have grizzlies already, I'll rather butcher them and save some FPS troubles later on.

Black bears can't be war trained.

But can be easily modded to do so.

And almost should be.  Black bears are quite nasty when hungry.  Scavengers who consider us quite within the [Large_predator] parameters.

I feel for you man, I've been playing DF for years and this is the first time I've managed to obtain a breed able pair of grizzlies. I cage trapped the initial male grizzly wandering around the wilds (which was pure luck) and purchased three females over the course of a decade from the hippies. Unfortunately both of the first females were asexual, the third however wasn't which finally got me rolling in cubs.

Chain them around entrances or the edges of the map to detect thieves and ambushes. But since you have grizzlies already, I'll rather butcher them and save some FPS troubles later on.

I have a mix of wolves and dogs doing that already. Dogs chained outside and wolves guarding the entrances. I don't know I dig the thought of greeting visitors with viscous territorial wolves and then dogs outside barking/annoying every creature that dares cross my borders. I'm not particularly worried about fps, keeping at least a couple breed able black bears isn't going to effect anything substantially.

Off topic, for your enjoyment..

That dog in the rain one had me on the floor!
One time, I was lucky enough to catch a female polar bear on a tundra. Kept that thing in a cage outside, after a season or two it gave birth thanks to a 2 polar bear males on the map at once.

How did that get pregnant in the cage? ???

I have no idea. I put it in a cage right when the other bears spawned, so maybe it got pregnant in the couple steps until it was locked in.

Breach hell and have only bears fight the demons.
Put the bears in pastures in the caverns to fight off any baddies that come around.
Make a deep pit with bears at the bottom to kill whatever prisoners you throw at them.

Stuff all the babies into a cage linked to a lever by the entrance. If anyone manages to break through your ridiculous trap entrance, pull the lever and have 30 black bears come flying out at them. Could also work for the caverns as defense against forgotten beasts or cave monsters (even if they don't win, they'll give enough time for new soldiers to grab their equipment).

If nothing else, I'm sure Mountainhome would love to have an army of bears sent to them (presumably via traders, though if you can find a way to launch black bears out of a mine cart cannon toward the capital...)

Why do that to the capital? Find out where the nearest Goblin or Elf site is and give them the flying bear treatment. Don't waste dead bears on your Kingdom, or you'll get a reputation amongst your people as the hill billies chucking bears at everyone.

"Why did you just send 40 black bears to fight a goblin siege instead of sending out grizzlies and your well trained militia?"

"To see what happens, duh."
