Pig Iron Mace

A strange mood dwarf just made an artifact pig iron mace. Is it any good as a weapon?

Yes :P

Arena test says pig iron maces aren't notably different from bronze or silver (or gold) ones. It should do fine in the hands of a highly skilled macedwarf. I'd say it's on par with any non-artefact mace you can make. Of course, a lucky artefact _could_ be quite a bit better, pig iron is pretty much middle of the road in weaponsmith mood options.

A simple base quality silver, steel, or copper hammer is better.

Hmmm. I think I'll just use my legendary Weaponsmith that I got from the mood to make another mace out of silver.

Another (unrelated) question: Are saves from 40.12 compatible with 40.14?

Yes. Also, unless you're fighting undead, don't use maces.

What if I have a migrant with mace skill? Is it better to train them in another weapon rather than use the skill they already have?

If zombies are a possible threat, make him a captain of a special ZCOM squad and make them fight nothing but zombies. For the fun of it. Because this is Dwarf Fortress, and we do whatever we can for the Fun of it.

From my experience, not true. Good macedwarf, if he is strong enough, will crush heads with silver mace as insane.

Right, and against Zombies, why would a knife user be better? Blunts are better weapons against zombies since they disable parts without separating them from the body.

Against living creatures, knives are better. Anything but undead, hammers are twice as good.

it's mostly the comparison of mace vs hammer where the mace loses out, the material is ok. So by all means, if you have someone already skilled at using a mace, go ahead, retraining may take longer than you want to spend on it
