Unencrypting Data
« on: October 17, 2014, 03:04:41 pm »

As I may have mentioned in the RAGGEEEEEEEE thread, my netbook's files have been encrypted by the Cryptowall 2.0 virus and they request 500$ to unencrypt it. Is there any way to unencrypt it another way?[<--I very much doubt it] Is it likely that the perpetrators will be caught and the private keys released to the public?[<--Additional doubt] Is there any way to reverse the computer to a prior state?[I think I've seen that done once.] I haven't actually PAID for anything on my netbook, its primarily full of freeware indie roguelikes, so I could just re-download basically everything with some effort. But I DO have some essential stuff for an IRL D & D campaign on it and would really like it back. Not to mention saves for my community forts.

Alright, none of this stuff works, because I forgot to make a system copy at any point in the past. At least there are only a couple important files that got affected, so there's that. And the virus itself has been dealt with. Extensive research tells me that the encryption this thing uses is very near impossible to break[At least until quantum computers become a thing].

Notable kill list of the encryptor:

7-8 GB of various DF mods and versions[Except the one I was using, somehow].

Cataclysm DDA[But not my backup save files, so there's that]

Caves of Qud

EVERY SINGLE WORD DOCUMENT

Skype

I guess I'll lock this now, since there's nothing else I can really do at this point besides cleaning up the now-useless files and rebuilding.
