I'm trying to dig a channel, but my miners insist on digging from the wrong side (they will be trapped if they dig from there).  I tried making the area restricted, but they still go there to dig.  Is there any way to make a dwarf dig from a particular side?

if you trying to dig out a area more than 2 tiles wide is easier to just have them make ramps from below and remove the ramps when your done

Yes, you can make a dwarf dig on any side, so long as it's the side the dwarf wants to dig from.
