Cannot Reach Site while digging a channel

My miners keep on canceling my channels with cannot reach site.   Why is this happening?  I watch the Miner walk up to the channel, stand in it for a while, then cancel construction.
Other sections of the same channel seem fine?

THis is a Magma channel.   Is it rocks?  Do they need little acloves to store things in?

EDIT: I notice that if I unsuspend some of the sites, they'll be built later no problem.  Is it just a weird bug I'm having to deal with?

Some rocks on the site are claimed for something else and can't be moved by the miner. Wait and it should fix itself.

Also if there are rocks in the channel the miner will move them outside of it.  If all the neighboring spots are assigned to building then they will suspend it as well, since they can't put the rock into a place that is waiting to build.  The message it give is just unclear.
