Can monsters attack through grates?
« on: May 11, 2008, 06:17:00 pm »

Say, I have a conveniently placed underground river that I could use for fishing, but there is a horde of cave river creatures in it. So, would I be able to fish safely if I put some floor grates right above it?

I think I remember one of my dwarf losing an eye to a carp through a floor grate in another fortress I had. I was even more of a noob then so I don't know if flooring with grates is fishy or not. Besides, carps are godly.

While monsters shouldn't be able to pass through grates, your fisherdwarves would get scared away from the river if they see them anyway.

Fortunately, fishable creatures will show up in just about any random pool of water, even if you dig it. So you can dig out a little pond attached to the river, protected by grates so monsters can't get in, and with walls to block line of sight to the river proper, and your fisherdwarves can fish safely in that.
