Taming animals? 40.12
« on: September 30, 2014, 12:45:05 am »

So, I'm trying to get some wild boars tamed. I have some piglets born from a trained mother. I've put the piglets into an animal training zone/pasture. I have also assigned my best animal trainer specifically to them and disabled all other labors from her. She's just pissing around on No Job in the meeting hall. What do I need to do to get this animal trainer to do the one damn job she's assigned to? It's not like she can't reach them. They're trained and waiting to be tamed. It should all be working.

I tried sticking a cage into the zone. Then I tried sticking the piglets into the cage inside the zone. Nothing. She's just sitting there on her hands. Not training these stupid pigs. One job. One thing to do and she won't do it.

They're already tamed! These ones are born tame.

They're not. They're labeled Trained and Semi-wild.

What? Okay... That's different than I remember. I thought they'd be tamed, not trained... I can't answer you fully then.

They're not. They're labeled Trained and Semi-wild.

I tamed wild boars (they are better than pigs, except they don't produce milk). The piglets will be fully tamed when the trainer will train them - once. So just add more trainers, one will do the job eventually. No cages, piggies pastured at a separate pasture zone, may double as training zone to be sure. I assign Any trainer to every newborn animal, to speed up the process. For some reason assigning a specific trainer, even without other jobs, will make it to take ages.

Also, the trainers have to periodically train older, wilder (semi-wild, half trained) pigs, so this may take precedence. I designed 20 trainers out of approximately 200 dwarves but don't disable other jobs. Administrators, gem setters, glassmakers, mechanics, dukes, marksdwarves, whatever what doesn't occupy them full time, currently three guys do the training and two are off-duty soldiers and the third is a duchess. One would never make it, because retraining old ones would take too long - or maybe there's a bug somewhere. Additionally, once the new animal is tamed, I disable training for it because it doesn't need it anymore.

You probably just forgot to mention it, but did you mark the piglets for training in the animal screen?

Normally, it's not even required to have the animals to be trained in the training zone. An animal trainer will bring them there if necessary.
I also go with just one trainer to improve skill and I never had any problems back in 34.11. Something new in 40.xx?

Not-fully-domesticated animals that need regular training seem to work on some sort of timer, i.e. at some point a "training request" is issued and the job actually created; when this time isn't up, training is not requested. This way, one trainer can handle twenty+ animals and still have plenty of spare time.

I don't know what determines the training requests. I've heard it said that it triggers when animals are "about to" lose a tameness level (no idea how close to it they have to be, though). Having multiple trainers available means those training requests are picked up and dealt with reliably, while a single trainer can easily miss one by being on break or when a dozen animals all become needy at the same time.

Animal children _usually_ request training before the year of their childhood is over, but it can take well over half a year before it triggers.

I guess I'll just assign them to "Any trainer" to get the job done, but I kinda wanted that dwarf to do the one thing she was assigned to do. This is more of a problem with getting my people to do the jobs I need them to do in any semblance of a timely manner. Or at all, really. I had a giantess run across half the map to get into my courtyard before the job to pull the lever to keep her out even became active. I designated a constructed floor to be removed months ago and nobody has gotten around to it. This is with 13-25 idlers. This "ha ha, lazy dorfs take forever to do important things" bit makes for amusing forum posts, but it makes gameplay a complete pain in the balls.

Pretty much this.  That hidden timer can really bork stuff up sometimes.

You could try making a burrow containing the piggies and the kennels + an animal training zone designation and trap your best trainer in there.. For levers, too, it seems like if you ever want one pulled reliably then you'd best stock the lever-room with food and drink, bed and table/chair, and devote a single dwarf's entire life to sitting by levers just in case :| Even after a lever is pulled it still takes a bit for the linked object to actually respond (seems like ages when a fiery behemoth is rushing your bridge) :)

Do I need kennels? I didn't think I needed kennels.

You don't need Kennels.  They're actually mostly pointless right now.
