How to resolve a harassing quest (Goblin in a well)
« on: September 19, 2014, 02:58:18 pm »

When I visit a hamlet and inquire about problems the people start with some gang harassing people in the street talk, only then the will tell about usual problems. Even lady of the hamlet starts with it. I asked about the gang leader location, and got answer that he is far away in his gobboland town.

But then I found a goblin hidden in a well. I was observing it - during day it "harasses" people by introducing itself to them, and during day it keeps quiet (because there's nobody around that well). I asked the goblin what it was, and it says to be a lieutenant to the gang leader on a special mission. It seems friendly enough, though there is a suspicious human corpse along with some stuff at the bottom of the well. Legends says he drowned, so maybe he wanted to chat with the goblin or something and slipped. Probably hitting the goblin on his way, because it's bruised.

Now I take it that the goblin plays practical jokes on the hamlet population, and that's this "harassing" they're keep talking about. But it is friendly. So what is the correct way to solve the situation? I'm worried that killing the goblin may make people uncomfortable. (Apart from killing something which did not attacked me - two cadavers in the water source? Disgusting). I'm at my party limit currently, but maybe convincing the goblin to join would help?

This must be some standard quest with a specific way to solve.

The goblin bandit being unbelievably friendly is probably related to several of the 40.x relationship new bugs and problems between entities/factions that makes gobs/bandits friendly to people they should be enemies or at least hostile to (how many bandits overlords and masters greeting me happily when i was a heartperson tasked by my lord to get rid of them all).

Unfortunately, there's no real way due to how buggy it is, to predict the outcome of you killing that goblin, while it's obviously broken because he's not hostile to you, maybe the breakage is not too severe and everyone in the hamlet will tell you "it was inevitable" (as none cares about anything currently in DF, out of some very rare cases like freeing the child of your lord/lady from goblin prisons), or the breakage is very severe and everyone in the hamlet will call you "murderer" and will spit on you on a daily basis

the harassing quest is a bunch of bandits going around robbing people, what happen is that goblin fell into the well along with that person and said other guy drowned.
I guess both kinda fell in and since you can only have 1 person standing the other guy drown due to be prone in knee high water.
this is a unique situation you got. you could just fast travel and see if the goblin still in the well upon return.

I tried the fast travel thing, but first I climbed to the well, took the human body, climbed out, removed a skull from it and threw it to the well, hoping to provoke the goblin. But it was not affected, unlike my companions.

Anyway, upon fast travelling and returning - goblin was out of the hiding place, fully healed, had five or so companions (where they were hiding previously I don't know), the skull inside the well was gone, and they all scattered around the village only to return to the centre and wait.

I was hoping this is some special kind of quest, but indeed it seems to be a coincidence/bug thing.

I used sneak to down one separate goblin. But when I tried the other, a lasher with a silver whip somehow one-shot offed me, even steel helmet didn't help :/

I get attacked occasionally now, it's still not common and most people run away or will only attack if I attack first, but it's better than before when everyone would just stand there even after I chopped their limbs off or killed their kids in front of their face.

How the robberies work is that the group will move to positions around their target, while making friendly small talk. Once everyone is in position*, they switch to intimidation/threats/robbery/non-lethal violence. If you pre-emptively use violence, especially lethal, people seem to hate you for it. It looks like you have to let them threaten you, and then fight back non-lethally in order to deal with the problem.

* if someone can't get into position for whatever reason, the situation stalls and nothing further happens.

Oh so that's why my robbery attempts keep failing, I need a group of robbin buddies to pull the heist off.

So one situation I got later was probably not a bug: the (different) goblin muggers were friendly, but they were following me, even when I was stealth. After save/load they started fight with my companions and quickly incapacitated them and killed. I'm not sure if they were targeting me, because I ran away. Later I returned and while sneaking killed all the goblins except one, by throwing spears and whips. So that tailing behaviour was not a bug, they were trying to mug me or my companions, and my companions were too cocky to let that happen. Thus they died.

Unfortunately the people still feel harassed, because probably one goblin survived - or they mean the captain of the bandit (I killed the group head, but he was only a lieutenant). Now this there may be a bug, because the people direct me to that goblin who is supposed to be in this country, but they use a name of a location (camp) which is in another country. They say that the goblin is in camp Cursestatic in Field of Races (the general area where the mugging was taking place), but the camp of that name is really located in Beloved Forest, quite far away.

Also, some of the fights with muggers were strange, because they started by strapping their weapons to their bodies, as if attempting the non-lethal solution, but then they used some of the weapons anyway (especially whips were nasty), probably because my companions were using weapons.
