Submerged Adamantine
« on: September 29, 2014, 02:52:48 pm »

I found adamantine.

As you can see, it is fully submerged in water. I tried draining it, but (unlike a pond) it apparently is infinite. This is what is immediately above:

Perhaps I can mine it from above? What is the best way to reach it?

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but from your description, this is what I would do:

Dig around/under the water and approach the adamantine from the side.  The vein will run from where you found it downwards.

Can't see any pictures, mate. But like most problems this one can be solved by magma: make an obsidian dam that separates the spire from the rest of the lake, then drain.

EDIT: Well now I can see a picture, but I can't make anything of it because of the tile set. The narrow passages will make it a lot easier to deploy magma, anyway.

It's probably a lake that is sourcing from the side. Those can be problematic because they produce a tremendous amount of flow.

There are two ways of tackling this.  First, dump magma on it and create a dam (as suggested by others), or find the source of the on-flow at the side of the map where it comes in and create a complete drain along the side of the map underneath the lake before piercing it.  I can post some pictures on how to accomplish that later if you want, not at my DF PC right now.  A full drain like that shoud rout the flow immediately off the map, allowing the lake to eventually drain.

Clever! Thank you! I did it.  :) As soon as I collected it, a dwarven child was possessed by a fey mood and proceeded to craft an adamantine ring. Oh, well.

Its not like you need the adamantine anyway. Steel weapons is good enough for everything but the rare titans and forgotten beasts made out of superior metal materials.

Come on, just look at the colour. If I was a dwarf with an adamantine armour or weapon I would at least paint it to resemble steel or other metal. Wearing something weighing less than wood is embarrassing, but wielding such a thing is humiliating. I would feel like on a film set, swinging a prop sword.

Even though you've already gotten to your adamantine, I'll add that there is a third method that you could've used. It's more complicated than the way you went about it, but (usually) less complicated than obsidian casting.
Dropping a cave in on top of the vein would've allowed you access. You just want to make sure that the chunk of cavern you drop is broad enough to cover the entire tube and create a walkable path to it. This is also a good way of managing the size and shape of underground lakes without (much) risk of drowning your miners.

I did not know that. Thank you for the information.

There is also the potential of using pumps to dig then dam, similar to aquifer piercing
