Put him in a nobledwarfs room and seal it off.

Zoo that sucker.

Then try and catch a dragon, titan, or hydra to go with it. Collect 'em all.

"Cerol Uristbidok has been ecstatic lately. She admired a fine colossus in a cage lately."

Edit: Oh, and to actually answer your question about how to place the cage, use b -> j, then use v to check each of the cages to find out which one it's in and place it where you want to.

How do you get something out of a cage? I've got a donkey in a cage... for some reason. But I need leather.

You could press "z" and set the donkey to be slaughtered, then tan the hide for your leather problems.

If you just want to set it free, build the cage, go to the assignment menu, and press enter on the animal with the +. It should be the donkey. But dwarves won't let hostile animals out of cages like that. Dangerous animals can only be let out through a lever.

Can you move a hostile animal from a cage to a chain?

I similarly got a colossus trapped in a cage. I put it in a zoo succesfully, which worked well. But then, just a couple of minutes ago actually, I thought I'd attempt to sell it to the traders, so I dismantled the cage from the zoo so it would be placed on the animal pile. I think that worked, but when I assinged it to be brought to the depot, I think the colossus got out then and started wreaking havoc around the fort. I tried to contain it with my small military, but in the end I had the whole fortress drafted and piling everyone on the colossus finally worked. Lost about 15 dwarves outright, plus a dozen injured..

Maybe you could just release the colossus in a large inaccessible pit, then send a squad of crossbow dwarves to stand around the edge of the pit and shoot at it.  I bet that that would train up their crossbowdwarfship very quickly, and the colossus probably wouldn't die quickly (since they don't have vital organs to pierce, and don't bleed).

Cage traps will catch megabeasts right now. Thats why I only use cage traps. They also catch berserk dwarves. I need to build a zoo.
