I'll wager these are the elven merchants, and you tried to offer something they hate, like leather items or bone crafts.

The merchants are in the process of stomping off in a huff.  They won't trade with you any more until next year.

They hate most things that require you to kill a living creature to get it.  No bones, skulls, leather, or wood.  Pig tail and rope reed cloth is fine, and so is cave spider silk.

No they are human merchants with mules. I hadn't completed my road when they arrived, it is mid-summer year 2. When they unloaded the goods at the trading center I went to the trading screen and I could only seize stuff, I didn't notice that I couldn't trade until i had selected stuff to trade and went to hit t and nothing was happening and I noticed it was greyed out.

I saved the game and reloaded it and this time i took a screen shot.  http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=errortl3.png

I just seized everything from them anyways when I couldn't trade, figuring I could offer stuff back to them somehow so they don't get angry.

Sorry I wasn't very clear in my first post.

Might these goods be goods that you didn't make at the fort? I seem to remember being unable to trade stuff that I bought at the prepare screen.

Now that I look at your shot, I have another question: Did you press Enter to mark the goods?

I take it this means you seized things before you tried to trade?  That's your problem, the shopkeep's not going to sell you a coke after you break open his ATM.

Well I continued playing anyways and they just left with nothing and a while later the Dwarves showed up and I have the opposite problem, Trade and Offer are lit but not seize. Are there certain conditions that I am unaware of that governs whether or not I can choose seize/offer/trade? http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=error2uh9.png

And Mzbundifund I only seized it after I couldn't press the trade button.

Well, the best way is, mark their goods that you want to trade, and then mark yours until the trade option (t) is available.

You cannot sieze from the dwarf traders, only humans and elves.

You cannot offer items that are not made in your fortress as a tribute.
