Where are my goblins?
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:12:00 am »

I am now in the fifth year of my current fortress. In the previous 4 years, the only goblins I have seen are 2 goblin snatchers. Not one ambush.
Last year, my population passed 80. No sieges yet.
The only thing I can think of is that it might be related to the goblin kings from year 1 not marrying and not having any offspring or succesors:

(from world_history-region1.txt)

The Gall-Jackal of Patterning, Goblins
Worship List
 Arstruk, demon: fire, death, torture
Ruler List

  • Arstruk (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children
    ...

    The Doom of Salves, Goblins
    Worship List
Zom Wraithbones, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Zom Wraithbones (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children
    ...

    The Lone Monsters, Goblins
    Worship List
Uktang the Grave of Dust, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Uktang the Grave of Dust (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children

    ...

    The Spattered Plague, Goblins
    Worship List
Lozu the Brands of Bone, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Lozu the Brands of Bone (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children

    ...

    The Branded Ticks, Goblins
    Worship List
Zom Dustphantom the Wicked Crypts, demon: fire, death, torture
    Ruler List

  • Zom Dustphantom the Wicked Crypts (b.???, Reign Began: 1), *** Original Line, Never Married
         No Children

    ...

Is it possible that all goblin civilisations were wiped out in the history of the world?
Or is it just plain bad luck and will the goblins eventually come?

If you haven't noticed their leader and the person they worship are one and the same, so their leader is a demon god. So all it means is they have one bad ass leader that can rule for ever.

-edit-

it is a lot of bad/good luck if you haven't got any goblin ambushes up till now. Do you have the latest version?

Okay... But still? Where are they?
If they don't show up soon I will have to harass the elves a bit more to piss them off. But I'd rather have goblin sieges.

How much wealth have you created/exported?

I've found that the attacks don't really start until you start making expensive stuff.  For the first couple of years I'll usually just use rock mechanisms as trade goods (not to avoid the attacks - just because it's the only even remotely valuable thing I can make!)

I've been exporting full bins of masterpiece stone, bone and shell crafts for almost 4 years now. Also mechanisms. My first year produced 2 legendary stonecrafters and a legendary bone carver from moods.

Need to export some valuable goods?

Lavish meals. The value is utterly ridiculous - sometimes well over 1000 per stack.

Are all of the goblin civs all the way on the other side of the map?

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

masterpiece elf totems are a big hit, too.

By best exports by far are masterful dyed giant cave spider silk bags.  I had a clothier get in a fey mood, and I locked the shop to legendary only, and built another one for lesser skilled clothiers.

I have the dyer shop running full time and am constantly stitching out $1400 bags.

You know, Masterwork crafts  made regular pig tail cloth, with no dye, are worth 1000 each  ;).

Isn't there a "civ" list when you start a fortress game that shows what civ types are nearby? Perhaps you are just so far away from goblins that they can hardly be bothered.

It's a roll of the die when they come. In the 16 years thus far of Graspedhelm, we've had many years where not so much as a snatcher has shown up. It took quite a number of years for them to seige as well (I was at 100+ pop for maybe 3 years?)
Year 11 or 12 They seiged me a total of 4 times, once each season, including winter (which I didn't think was possible).

Now, once a year like clockwork, exactly .000034 milliseconds after the elf caravan shows up.

::Sounds of Sirens and a Huge Bell Ringing::

Orin, Hammermaster runs to the Gate. "What's the alarm?"
"The gobbos are slaughtering another elf caravan!" replied Ernst the Fisherdwarf
Orin drew his Warhammer from his belt, an image of Dwarfly Grace and Courage.
>Smack<.......>Smack<....>Smack<>Smack<>Smack<>Smack<>Smack<.....>Smack<
"I told you that bell was for emergencies. I need a drink."
Ernst gathered his teeth and took hi splace in line to "harvest" the battlefield.
