As I'm sure you're all aware, the average value to be rolled on 1d6 is 3.5, thus average on 2d6 is 7 and the average on 3d6 is 10.5, etc. But certain roleplay systems include the option of rolling 4d6 for a stat and removing the lowest, so the range is the same as a 3d6, but the average value is higher. Does anyone actually know what the new average value for this is, and whether there is an equation that can describe it?

Don't worry too much about complex equations, I did maths at college (UK), and wasn't too shoddy at it.
