How do I get my highly suicidal animals out of the danger room?
« on: September 05, 2014, 01:08:37 am »

I built a 4X4 danger room, and set it up for dwarves. Now, for some reason, every animal in my fort just loves the danger room. I have tons of animals trying to flood in there. I didn't notice them until a few were in, so I let them out, but some more came in at the same time. It's been twenty minutes of trying to herd them out, even assigning every last one to a pasture on the surface, well away from it, doesn't work: none of them are pets, I made sure pets don't exist in the fortress. Anything that IS a pet by immigrants in restrained and walled underground on some moss. Why are all the others swarming the danger room?

Probably because you declared it a Meeting Area. Animals not assigned to a pasture will hang out in a meeting area, even if that causes them to starve to death (they will prefer a stone-floor meeting area over a nice, grassy pasture any day). It's the fact that you assigned them all to a pasture that confuses me . . . have you given the dwarves time to to lead each of them to the pasture yet? They won't go there on their own.

Failing that, just lock the door on them & build ANOTHER damn danger room.

I made the statue walls a statue garden, to keep dwarves with broken faces happy. Once I turned that off, they all left. Finally... I thought maybe suicide had been put into the game for animals.

if you want to keep personal pets from entering when their masters enter, you may need to keep the door tightly closed (I think it's "o" that keep animals from being able to open the door themselves)

Even better, make an airlock with two tightly-closed doors.

Or you could pasture the animals somewhere to keep them out of the way.

Well I'd already done both of those, pasture and 'o'ed doors. They came through with the dwarves picking up better equipment, which often happened a lot, since my legendary armor smith- who just popped up as a great 63 year old immigrant- is constantly working. Once the statue garden was gone, they really liked that statue garden.

Animals will often follow around the dwarf that trained them. As for pastures not working, you need idle dwarves with time to catch them all and put them in the pasture.
