Digging holes

How would one go about digging a hole in the earth? I want to make a moat but don't know how.

Careful you don't attach your moat to your fortress; it's an easy mistake to make. Digging channels removes the floor from the current layer, and the wall from the layer below.

While we are on topic:

I've made a mistake of digging out a tile and the one below it. however, I want to make a hole there. How can I do this? There are no walls remaining so d-->h does not work.

If I understand correctly, [d][h] should still work if you use it on the natural floor tile that remains between the two tiles you dug out.

So it should, as I've done it many a time.  if it's really a problem see if you can find a way to drop a rock on that spot from above... the weight will almost always break the floor if there's no solid support beneath.  also good for making Dwarf sammiches

This doesn't mean "drop a loose stone into the pit" - it means "cause a landscape collapse above the hole so that the debris falls into it".
