My first question - way to increase # of characters on s
« on: July 04, 2007, 05:04:00 pm »

I got DF last Friday and it seems to have cured my World of Warcraft habit... of course now I have a DF habit.  :)

Anyway, my question is whether there's any way of resizing the display so I can view more of my fortress at the same time. I want it "zoomed out," as it were. If it were possible to fill up my whole screen with the tiny font used in the "window mode" I'd really like that.

But whenever I try to edit the init.txt file, it doesn't work out the way I want. If I resize the windowed mode to fill the whole screen, the characters get bigger along with it. I want to keep them the same itty-bitty size, but expand the view so I can see more of what's going on.

Not yet, but in a few versions I expect so.

Cool.

I also saw the screenshots of the under-development version with randomized cliff faces. I'm betting the "random map" version will fix one of the other irks I'm having - and that is that each time I play, it's always the same formula. Outside River > Cliff face > Underground River > Chasm > Lava. I'd kind of like it to be a surprise, so I'd never know what you'll run into in the depths of the mountain.

I'd also like to see the traders bring something useful. Do they ever bring more than food? On low-wood maps, do you ever have a timber caravan or something?

I would love an expandable viewable area. I've got a widescreen laptop and would love to get the square 16x16 (or whatever) sized fonts to cover the entire screen without stretching or using the black border.

Also, when the trade barons come (with the Trade Minister, I think), you can order certain things (leather, animals, alcohol, crafts, etc). Not sure yet if there are more advanced order options later.

I've always wanted something like that, just to sort of keep an eye on a larger area. It's not so bad early in the game but later on when you're past the micromanagement stage and have got a huge fortress with 100+ dwarves running around, and you're stuck looking at one tiny area at a time it gets annoying fast.

I believe wood has already made the list.  I'm not sure if you can order metals though.  We will probably be able to since not all sites will necessarily have all metals or map features.

Edit:  Woops, I mean in the next release.

Due to the ability to place a fortress anywhere next release, fortresses won't always have all the materials they need. Therefor Toady said the caravans will be able to bring way more items, including timber and probably metals. Not every fort will have coal or iron anymore, now you may actually have a reason to be excited to see a caravan come in.

Well, you get iron from goblins, right? So you only need other dwarves to bring you coal and limestone to start making unlimited amount of steel. Sounds great!

Would be good if you could buy limestone and coal crafts from the caravans and be able to USE them in yr steel production. Still not sure if crafts come in that form and I'm pretty sure metalsmiths wouldn't use 'em.

Although the way the formula for steel is setup it still requires an ore.  That really has to change so it can use variable amounts of iron, limestone, and carbon stuffs.

Your talking about still requiring coal for steel production even though it might be like say on a magma smelter?

Coal was needed to take out the impurities of iron. Sorry if I misunderstood o_O?

Congrats on breaking the World of Warcash habit - I know how that stuff is.  I've been thinking about signing up again now that I've got a job, but now that I've got a job, I've also got Dwarf Fortress, so I dropped that idea.  The entire development team at Blizzard has nothing on this game.

..Ahem.  Yes.  More characters on the screen would be fantastic, I think, if anything so I can get something more than a awkward block going from one side of my screen to the other, without reaching more than a quarter of the way vertically (I'm using a custom tileset, of course).  I'm not yet a part of the wide-screen fan club.   :)

I remember Toady saying that the size of the viewport was pretty much hard coded into the game, (Possibly into curses), so I wouldn't hold your breath. He may change it one day, but it would be a lot of work, and I doubt it would be very exciting to do.

Yeah, I'm gonna do it eventually, but the curses holdovers add some unpleasantness to the process.

You can always do what I do... Take a screenshot via the menu periodically, and open it in a background window, zoomed out.  It's not a live view, but it gives a good sense of the entire fortress.
