Clay & sand no longer unlimited?
« on: September 06, 2014, 08:14:43 am »

I made a small clay collection zone, collected a few clay, and went about my business elsewhere. After a little while I got a cancellation message saying there was no valid clay collection zone. I checked the zone, and it showed 0 for clay. I made a new zone, size 21, and checked back after some more clay collection and found it was size 20. So, I tried with sand collection and found much the same. I didn't see anything about this in the change logs, though. Anyone else finding this in .40.x?

There is cave moss over most of the zones. It doesn't appear to be related to that. When I designate a new collection zone, things like moss, shrubs, and saplings seem to have no effect on the effective zone size.

Don't really understand you, but try to build DIRT road on your collection zone.

Best zones are next to pillars/walls of clay (or sand) because pillars never get grass. The tiles the dwarves stand on is labelled as a collection zone, but it doesn't need to contain clay/sand itself, it must have a neighbouring tile which contains grass - all accessible tiles surrounding sand or clay are valid collection zone. If the source tile contains grass it must be degrassed (paved road also works for me, and it doesn't disappear later), nearby collection zone tiles can contain whatever, even a hatch over an empty space.

Ah, that makes sense now, thank you. I was looking at the contents of the tiles themselves and seeing some dense growth allowing collection, and some sparse growth not allowing it. Some saplings allowing collection, others not. That really made it look unrelated to what was growing there.
