Can't dump owned stuff!
« on: May 08, 2008, 09:30:00 am »

Even though I have provided them with chests and cabinets in their rooms, my dwarves still insist on leaving their unused clothes all over the damn fortress. There are old pairs of socks and threadbare shirts lying all over the floor, and even though I marked them to be dumped nobody takes them to my magma pit of doom (aka garbage dump). The only explanation I can find is that the items they refuse to dump is owned by dwarves. So how do I get rid of all this crap lying around?

It is something you will just have to live with.  Even with a slew of chests and cabinets in say a noble’s room, they chuck half their items on the floor or more.  One thing that will clean up all those items I do know of.  If a dwarf has a tomb and dies, all his belongings are moved into the tomb room with him.  Depending on how many items, you may need a damn big room.

That's lame...really lame. In fact it qualifies as a bug since items that are marked to be dumped should be dumped, no excuses.

In a slightly unrelated note. After a couple of years the dwarves clothes deteriorate to "threadbare" or "in tatters" status. Is it possible to replace their damaged clothes with new clothes? Or does walking around in rags not really bother them.

I'd really like a more effective way of handling owned items, too. However, I can understand that stealing someone's items to take them away for dumping might offend the owner, but then again dwarves don't really look after their owned items in the first place. I see items get dropped on the battlefield when an enemy is killed, and when a dwarf happens to like the item enough to claim it, it then just gets left forevermore where the enemy fell.

Dwarves currently aren't very good at removing rotting clothing. Because of this, the bad thoughts related to rotting clothing were disabled in version 38a, which was released this February. Previously to that, dwarves could get very upset when their clothes decayed, and could never be relied on to get rid of them before getting new clothes.
