well when you generate a map, it usually shows either:
code:

~~~~~  or  ~~~~~
          ~~~~~

for the aquafier (I Think) which I assume means either 1 or 2 levels.  I have avoided them thus far, but the point is if you didn't pay attention during map generation, then there is no way to tell.

What size of the magma forge / furnaces needs to be above magma for it to work, and which sides qualify? It seems more logical to me to make the magma vent just one tile so to remove any possibility of magma creatures infiltrating your forge rooms.

I believe only 1 of the outer 8 squares needs to be over magma.

Examining the magma pool with the designation tool open would indicate that the aquifer is at least 12 levels deep.  I am not sure if my aquifer was on 1 or 2 different rock types, but I know I have 3 layers of igneous rock below the aquifer.  It is going to be a lengthy engineering operation to sink this shaft methinks, as any error in water control leads to a flooded shaft which is a pain to empty.  Ah well, I will get there eventually and commence mass steel production to go along with my obsidian (which is the only rock I have access too at this stage).
